Biting

Ouch, those little land shark teeth are sharp!

Puppies do teethe and biting is typical and expected. They teethe a lot! Puppies use their mouths to explore, investigate their surroundings and communicate. Also, how they play with other dogs. During this teething stage you will need some hard chew toys/bones to get you through it. Do not allow that cute, adorable puppy to chew/bite your hands at no time. Maybe cute now but can send mix signals to your new puppy. Remember everything is new to him. They are very impressionable. So NEVER allow them to bite on us hoomans! When your puppy tries to use YOU as a chew toy, aways redirect him to an appropriate chew toy/bone. You can also turn your back on them. If you have young children, it can be challenging. They associate young children with their littermates and/or toys. Their running and jumping around may seem like fun to your excitable puppy and your puppy may want to join in.  However, if you teach your child to stand completely still, arms crossed against their chest, then the child appears boring, and the puppy will usually be less interested. If not, then a time out technique to calm down may be needed. Use a Crate or a Playpen for a time out. Then allow him to join the family again and redirect him to a toy/bone that is acceptable for teething. Puppies are so much like our hooman children and need positive reinforcement. Encouraging words and lots of praise. But make sure you teach your puppy the command words, "NO!" "STOP" and "LEAVE IT" Also give your puppy lots of exercise. This will help with burn out their energy. Flirt Poles for dogs can help for exercise inside the home.

The teething process does not last very long so that's the good news! Puppies start losing their first set of teeth between 3-5 months of age. Usually by 6 months old they should have nearly all their adult teeth in place. If any teeth that are growing crooked or perhaps causing an overbite might need to be corrected before the teething process is done. If your puppy is happy, healthy, playful, eating, and drinking normally, teething shouldn’t be an issue. However, if your puppy seems to be in pain or reluctant to eat or play, then a visit to your veterinarian is recommended. Once their adult teeth come in the biting does get significantly less. But during teething process, it’s important to provide them with appropriate chew toys to relieve the discomfort that comes with teething. It may seem surprising to you, but they not only need hard chew toys, but soft ones as well. After all yor hands are soft and they love those. We recommend GoDog plush toys with Chew Guard Technology-soft & durable, Kong Wubba, Petstages Cool Teething Stick, a Nylabone Puppy Chew Freezer Dog Toy. Like all toys inspect them regularly. Especially if they have any squeakers. Bully Sticks, Antlers are a favorite for a teething puppy too. Keeping those little land sharks' teeth busy and with persistence you will see such a huge improvement in the biting. Just keep your cool and keep at it!
