Basic Training for a New Puppy

Basic Training

1.) For the first 2 -3 weeks with the new family it is important for the puppy to continue his socialization and to establish good habits. Get puppy on a routine.

2.) Teach puppy his name.

3.) Teach puppy to come on command, to sit, to stay, down and heel. You can use Zukes Mini Naturals as a training treat.

4.) Housebreak puppy, the crate training method is the easiest, we recommend the Midwest Lifestages Crate. Your new puppy must be taken outside upon awakening, after eating and following playtime. In general, he will have to relieve himself every two-three hours at first.

5.) Train puppy to ride in a car as soon as possible don't forget the Seat Belt. Check with your state on requirements.

6.) Train puppy not to jump or not to play roughly. Remember to always praise him/her and offer a small reward, Zukes Mini Naturals are perfect just the right size.

7.) Get your puppy used to a Collar & Leash. It is an adjustment for them and can take a little time. But you will have better control of your new puppy. We recommend Lupine products because they have a lifetime guarantee, even if chewed. Give your puppy some time to get used to the collar & leash. Its all new to them. If after a month or so and your puppy is still pulling when walked. I highly recommend the PetSafe Easy Walk No-Pull Dog Harness. It's the ultimate harness to stop pulling and to have better control. I have also had luck with the ThunderLeash No-Pull Dog Leash.

8.) Enroll puppy in a basic obedience class as soon as possible, usually after they receive their last shots along with their rabies vaccination. In a addition, a puppy kindergarten class may also benefit you and the puppy.  I can not stress the importance of basic training enough.

Remember your puppy is a puppy and has the learning capability as a 6-month-old human child. So, if he/she brings things to you, even your diamond necklace, a mink coat or a dirty sweat sock. Show your appreciation and thanks, but substitute with a chew toy instead!!
