No Home is Complete,

Without the Pitter-Patter of Puppy Feet!

Congratulations on your decision to get a new puppy! It is an exciting time when you decide to bring a new puppy home, weather you are a first-time puppy owner or bringing a puppy home after long intervals. Preparing for a new puppy is the same as preparing for the arrival of a human baby. Our goal is to give you some helpful information and recommendations that we have learned over the years.

First, we recommend gathering all your puppy essentials prior to bringing a new puppy home. This way it will make the transition to their new home so much easier on you and the puppy. Therefore, you can concentrate solely on the new puppy. Without preparation bringing home a new puppy can be a little difficult. Below we will go over all the essentials you will need to prepare for your new arrival. But you will also need to decide on a veterinarian. Contact your local veterinarians in your area. Ask about pricing for visits, vaccinations and their hours of operation along with if they are available after hours for emergencies?  I recommend taking into consideration their location from your home. Make your appointment for your new puppies first wellness exam prior to bringing home your new puppy.

                Puppy Checklist

Food, Treats, Supplements and Food Bowls

Your puppy should come home with some puppy food. We don't recommend changing it for at least a few weeks. This can cause tummy upset with loose stools. Then make sure you transition the puppy over to their new food gradually over a week's period. Adding a little more each day. If you are acquiring a large breed puppy. Make sure their food is formulated for a Large Breed puppy. Different breeds require different protein, Calcium, fat etc. The Rapid growth in Large Breed Puppies can causes skeletal disorders (like hip dysplasia) which is believed to be linked to genetics is also linked to diet and made worse by excessive amounts of calcium and/or overfeeding during the puppy phase of life. Now a days there's a lot of good foods available we recommend Fromm Large Breed  Puppy and Fromm Puppy food. You will also need some soft, small training treats for a reward. We recommend Zukes Mini Naturals. Chicken is usually best for puppy's sensitive bellies. Sometimes the littlest thing can give them a little loose stool and upset stomach and some pumpkin as a supplement can definitely help. We recommend Weruva Pumpkin Patch Up!  to help support healthy digestion. Its always a good idea to start them on a daily probiotic. We recommend Dogzymes Digestive Enhancer Daily Probiotic with the organic whey protein base. We start our large breed puppies on Nupro Joint Supplement when the puppy turns approx. 4 months old. Does not contain corn or wheat. Full of the vitamins and minerals that are lost during the processing process of dry kibble. Plus, glucosamine, chondroitin and msm which is recommended for a large breed puppy and will also help joint & arthritic conditions for older dogs. For small or medium breed puppies the Nupro all natural dog supplement works well for them. Has all the same vitamins and minerals but without the glucosamine, chondroitin and msm. Another wonderful supplement we start all our puppies on at approx. 6-month-old is Grizzly Omega Health which supports a healthy immune system, healthy skin and coat made from Wild Alaskan Salmon.

You will need a Food Storage container to keep their food fresh as possible and a measuring scoop. An actual scoop that reflects cups/ounces. Don't just use an old plastic cup from your kitchen cabinet. You want to give your new puppy the correct daily recommended amount. We also recommend Stainless Steel Double Bowls in a Stand Holder. Adjustable are a good choice as your pup grows they can be raised. Wash bowls daily.

Don’t forget to Puppy Proof your Home & Yard prior to bringing your new puppy home.

Puppies are naturally inquisitive, which can often lead to serious injury. Here are some tips on how you can make your house safer for the arrival. These devices can not only be used for potty training but are also used as a safe haven for your new puppy. An Ex-pen (puppy playpen) will confine puppy to one area while potty training. Too much freedom before they are potty trained can lead to having accidents

One of the most useful devices for raising a puppy, and perhaps one of the most misunderstood, is a fold-up wire crate. Properly used, this device can aid in potty training puppies. It can also be used for your own puppy's safety, and to save your home from costly damages. Since the crate is portable, it can be easily taken along on trips. The crate should be ready when you bring home your new puppy and place it in your bedroom. You both will sleep so much better. We recommend Midwest Life Stages Crates. Remember too much room in the crate can cause accidents. Make sure your crate comes with a divider panel and is sized for the breeds adult height and weighted. After a few months you can attach Crate Lick Plate to their crate to sooth and keep them busy.

If you have a fussy puppy, then you can try a Crate Cover to help quiet them. It really helps!

Another great potty-training tool are Potty Bells. The bells are hung from the doorknob. Your puppy will learn to associate the noise the bells make when you open the door to go outside to go potty and they will hit the bells with their paws to notify you.

Don't forget Urine & Odor Remover for those tiny potty accidents. We really love ALZOO Stain & Odor Remover, quickly lifts & dissolves pet Ssains & helps eliminate odors, 100% Plant-Based and have used it for years. Does a wonderful job of getting the stains and odors out.

Most people don't think of getting the Poop Bags and a Pooper Scooper. But they definitely will be needed. Along with a Poop bucket after cleaning up the yard.

Artificial Grass Pads can be useful for Apartment, condo or townhouse living. We recommend ones that are washable.

For more information about crate training, please Click here.

For the less aggressive chewer we recommend the Midwest Super Plush Bed which is ideal for inside or outside the dog crate. It is machine washable and will keep your new puppy warm and comfortable. However, for a more aggressive chewer the only bedding we would recommend in the crate is the Vetbed. But once they are out of that teething puppy stage, then the Midwest Super Plus Bed can be used.

For outside of the crate, he or she will need a nice and comfy dog bed. We like the Calming Dog Bed & Cat Bed, Anti-Anxiety Donut Dog Cuddler Bed. For the older pup, approx. 6 months old we recommend the Furhaven Soft & Comfy Orthopedic Dog Beds w/Removable Washable Cover.

For your yard, we recommend Wondercide natural Yard & Garden flea and tick yard treatment for preventative pest-repellent which is safe around cats, dogs and people of all ages.

Some Luxury Items

A camera will give you the ultimate peace of mind when you’re away from your home. The bark alert feature is a must have. You can see them, talk to calm them. A video monitor with camera that you can carry around with you while your home in your house or yard. Allows you to see, hear & talk to them.

Another luxury Item to have is a vacuum that does a dynamite job with dog hair. Your new puppy will shed his puppy coat for his adult coat. But for most breeds with their adult coat comes constantly shedding. Expect more in the Fall & Spring. The best upright vacuum we recommend is the Shark NV360 Navigator Lift-Away Deluxe Upright Vacuum with Large Dust Cup Capacity with HEPA Filter. The best Robot vacuum for pet hair is the iRobot Roomba i7+ Wi-Fi Connected Robot Vacuum with Automatic Dirt Disposal (7550). We also like the Hoover PowerDash Pet Advanced Carpet Cleaner Machine.  It does a marvelous job.

Always keep puppies off balconies, upper porches, and high decks. This is when a Baby/Pet Gate and Playpen can be used.

Collar and Leash

Introducing your puppy to his/her collar and leash can be a challenge. However, if your puppy is trained properly, it will be simple, satisfying and successful. It usually takes only a few hours for a pup or even an adult dog to adjust to a collar. Choose a collar that is light weight and fits comfortably but securely. We recommend this adjustable Collar up to 12 inches, 1/2 inch thick for puppy. It has a lifetime guarantee, even if chewed. Once your pup accepts the collar, put his leash on and then just sit and watch. Obviously, do this indoors or in a secure confined area. Let puppy drag the leash around on his own but keep a close eye on him so that he doesn't tangle or get hurt. Leave it on for just a few minutes at first. Later, repeat the exercise for longer periods of time. Put your pup on leash during mealtimes, so he associates the leash with a pleasant event. A Leash will also give you better control of your new puppy when teaching basic commands. But please stay away from Dog Parks, Hiking Trails, etc. until your new puppy has been fully vaccinated which is usually by the time, they are approximately 4 - 5 months of age.

For more information on Basic Training, Click here.

We recommend a 6-foot, 1/2-inch-thick leash for a puppy. This is the Leash we recommend for puppies, actually 2, so you can leave one in your car. Don’t forget an Engraving Identification Tag. Get puppy use to walking on a leash as soon as possible, however, avoid public places like parks and hiking trails where other dogs walk until puppy is fully vaccinated. After your pup has been vaccinated introduce your puppy to different environments. Have him interact with a wide variety of family members, friends and even strangers. Take him for walks, rides in the car, family outings such as picnics, little league games, etc... For your Puppies safety and to be a responsible pet owner, always obey the leash laws.

We encourage prospective puppy owners to read about puppy care.

We highly recommended

The Art of Raising a Puppy, published by the Monks of New Skete.

We definitely recommend picking up a copy!

Chew bones and Toys

Let’s move on to chew toys and chew bones. Puppies do teethe and biting is typical and expected. They teethe a lot! Puppies use their mouths to explore, investigate their surroundings and communicate. During this teething stage you will need some hard chew toys/bones and some softer. They tend to bite at your hands because they like the softness of them. We highly recommend Kong products. The Kong Extreme is one product because at a later date can be stuffed with treats, peanut butter (as long as it does not contain xylitol which is very toxic) BUDDY BUDDER is 100% Natural Dog Peanut Butter and freeze it for hours of fun! They enjoy the Banana Peanut Butter  and Pumpkin Peanut Butter flavors too. Also, you can freeze yogurt too.  Kong - Squeezz Stick, Kong Safestix, and Kong Puppy Binkie. The Petstages Orka Jack is a tough toy which also can be filled with treats or small kibble to keep them occupied, Nylabones (not the flexible ones. Pieces can get bitten off) Teething Keys and the Bully Sticks, (we recommend Red Barn). Also, Antlers are great for teething too. As with any toy/bones remember to supervise your new puppy and inspect regularly. We also recommend Bow Wow Buddy. Which tightly secures bully sticks to prevent choking on the end of the bully stick. As for soft toys we recommend Multipet Plush Lambchop, Kong Floppy Knots are tough toys made with durable material. GoDog Dog Toys are made with Chew Guard Technology. But like all toys always supervise your puppy. As the puppy gets older, Interactive Dog Toys like West Paw Zogoflex Toppl Interactive Treat Dispensing Toy, Tumble Blue Interactive Treat-Dispensing Toy, Outward Hound Nina Ottosson Dog Brick Interactive Treat Puzzle, and the  Outward Hound Nina Ottosson Dog Casino Interactive Treat Puzzle can give them mental stimulation too! As a rule, if your puppy can fit the whole toy in his mouth, the toy is too small and could be unsafe. For the older pup, a Snuffle Feeding Mat. No shoes or clothing, because the puppy will not be able to distinguish which shoes or clothing are allowed and which ones are not. They also seem to like Caterpillar Dog Toy, it keeps them entertained. The Outward Hound FireHose Fetch Dog Toy is very heavy duty and great for playing fetch or use as a water toy. The Wobble Wag Giggle Ball is an Interactive dog toy for a puppy. When rolled or shaken make fun giggle sounds.

Don't forget some teething toys that you can chill in the freezer. We like the Petstages Cool Teething Stick which can gets crunchy when frozen. Also, the Nylabone Puppy Freezer Chew Toys in assorted styles Nylabone Dog Moderate Chill & Chew.

Also, a Snuggle Pup is highly recommended. It can help with anxiety AND aid in comfort, especially during their transition to their new home. Reducing barking, whining and anxiety helping both YOU and your Pup sleep at night! The heartbeat mimics the mothers and litter mates sound. I recommend placing it just outside their crate.

All bones & toys should be supervised while playing!

Grooming Supplies & Puppy/Dog Care

Grooming is an important step in caring for your Furbaby and is usually a one-time investment. Grooming is a good way to inspect their skin, coat, ears, pads and teeth. Here is what we recommend especially for a large breed. The basic recommendations, Tropiclean Puppy Shampoo, Pin Brush, Slicker Brush, Furminator, Curved Grooming Scissors for Dog, Miller Forge Large Dog Clipper. A licking mat with suctions that attaches to the shower door or tub can be useful in keeping your puppy occupied and stress-free while bathing.

A Nail Grinder for more extensive grooming, Waterpik PPR-252 Pet Wand Pro Shower, Flying Pig High Velocity Dog Pet Grooming Dryer w/Heater.

Don't forget their EARS and TEETH. Zymox ear cleaner and a Dental Kit, again Tropiclean products are really good. As they get older you can use Tropiclean Dental Water Additive. Its best to start them early so the puppy will get used to being groomed, even if they do not need it. The reason why most pups/dogs do not like their nails clipped is that they are not used to having their paws handled. So, while loving, cuddling and petting you pup, take a few moments to handle his paws. Massage their paws, between their toes, on their pads, etc. This way they won’t give you a hard time when it's time to clip their nails.

For boo boo's I prefer do use a natural product. Richard’s Organics Incredible Skin Spray for Dogs and Puppies 12 weeks and older– Provides Relief from Skin Irritations Like Hot Spots, Dry Skin, Insect Bites and More – Speeds Healing, Fast Acting -100% Natural Active Ingredients. For more serious boo-boo's I like HomeoPet HP Healing Cream, Natural Support for Pet Wound Healing. It highly recommended.

Car Ride Home

Now let’s talk a little about the car ride home. Hopefully your new puppy will not be fed too close to his ride home. Bring a Crate, plenty of paper towels, newspapers, Pet wipes and some garbage bags in case your puppy gets sick. If you ride home is approximately 3 hours your new puppy should be able to hold his bladder for the trip home as long as your new puppy has done his business prior to leaving for the trip home. If you must stop for a potty break, then we recommend a spot that is away from traffic, but also an area that would not be appealing to other dogs. Make sure to put their collar on and use a leash.

New Paragraph

The First Night

  • The Crate should be set up in your bedroom prior to bringing your new puppy home. This way when your puppy wakes, you can her him whimper, bark or cry when needs to go potty. The 1st night can be rough on them. Remember they just spend their 1st 8 weeks with their Momma and Siblings. Snuggle Pup can help with anxiety AND aid in comfort. Reduces negative behavior and get more sleep. Helps with crate training and reduces barking and whining. Helping YOU sleep at night.
  • Make sure you new puppy has eliminated just before bedtime. He should be able to make it at least 2-3 hours at a time in the crate. Expect to get up during the night once or twice depending on the puppy.
  • We recommend Crate Covers to help quiet a fussy puppy.
  • See below for some music we recommend that will help sooth your new puppy.

The First 48 Hours in New Home

Schedule: Get your new puppy on a schedule right away. With frequent potty breaks every 2-3 hours. Feeding should consist of 3 meals a day, 4-5 hours apart. Get them used to the crate. With intervals of playtime/socialization time. Don’t wait until the evening. Remember the more you use the crate, the faster the puppy will learn to control their bladder, the faster you will be able to sleep through the night.

Exercise: Walk your puppy on a leash in his own yard. Stay away from public places, like hiking trails and parks. Mainly anywhere other dogs go until your pup is completely vaccinated. A nice walk before retiring will tire your pup out and should sleep better.

Love and attention: You have just added another family member to your family. He needs to be treated like one. Give him lots of love and attention. Don’t forget to praise A LOT for good behavior.

When One Becomes Two or Three…

Firstly, don’t expect your older dog to welcome the puppy with open paws and take him under his/her wing. Much will depend on the age and temperament of your older dog, but it is rare to find a mature dog who is overjoyed at having to share their owner and their home with a young whippersnapper of a puppy. While many already established dogs will be more tolerant of the new youngster, you can also expect that the new puppy will need to be ‘put in his place’ a number of times. Puppies have underdeveloped communication and social skills, so far the only other dogs they have had to ‘read’ are their littermates and their mother, so they must be shown the ‘rules of the road’ by your older dog. An ex-pen and/or baby/pet gates can be used to separate them when they can't be supervised.

Here’s some music we recommend to help sooth your new puppy.

Can play it for them while inside their crate or when your not home.

I hope this information helps. I don’t consider myself a dog/puppy expert but have been involved with them for 30+ years and I am happy to share everything I have learned with you in hope to make your life with your new Furbaby happy, healthy and a complete success.

Congratulations on your new puppy!!
